RBLR Rays Weekly Roundtable – 7/27/26 – 60 Wins & Counting

The Rays are once again at the center of the deadline conversation, but this week’s roundtable starts with a milestone before diving into the rumor mill. What does it mean that Tampa Bay is the only AL team to hit 60 wins so far, & we look at a realistic move for the rotation with the deadline fast approaching.

Sandy (@SandyAndTheRays): Joining The Sixty-Win Club

Last week in baseball saw the Rays become the first team in the American League to reach 60 wins this season. At the time of this writing, they’re still the only AL club to have done so, though the Yankees sit just one win behind.

It’s certainly better to reach that mark than not, but it also made me wonder what that says about the league. Over in the National League, the Dodgers, Brewers, and Braves have all already reached 60 wins, with the Dodgers hitting that mark earlier this month. Does that mean the NL is simply stronger at the top this season? Or is it just a reflection of where teams happen to be at this point in July? As is often the case in baseball, the answer is probably somewhere in the middle. Regular-season win totals only tell part of the story, and this conversation could look very different by October.

Regardless of how the AL stacks up against the NL, the Rays have already exceeded expectations. Baseball has a funny way of humbling even the hottest teams: one week you’re getting swept by a red-hot Red Sox club and wondering what went wrong — all the while sitting in first place. The next thing you know, you’re bouncing back with consecutive series wins over the Blue Jays and Guardians. With plenty of baseball left to play, it’ll be interesting to see just how far this team can go.

Jacob Macauley (@raysfarmreport) : Gausman A Good Fit?

Entering the last week before the deadline, the Rays enter the week with a 2.5-game lead of first place in the American League East and boast one of the most dynamic clubs in the game. They’ve been linked to nearly anyone who plays for a selling team and have consistently been marked as a “team to watch” at this year’s deadline. So who is it and who should they realistically target? I am going to propose a deal to acquire a player I like for the team. 

Tampa Bay receives RHP Kevin Gausman in exchange for right-handed pitching prospects Gary Gill Hill (45 FV) and Owen Wild (40 FV).

Entering the home stretch of the season, the Rays will likely look to add a player who can, at a minimum, cover innings for a group of starters that are entering uncharted territory in the innings department. When it comes to raw overall performance, Gausman’s 4.5 ERA (worst since 2019) might look bad on the surface, but he is still getting plenty of in-zone misses and generating his highest O-Swing% since 2022. Kevin is still limiting contact quality within a percentage of his career norms, so there isn’t much reason to expect positive regression coming for Gausman down the stretch.

As for the return for the Blue Jays, Gill Hill is someone who is going to impact a major league club sooner rather than later. Throughout his progression in the minor leagues, he has struggled to consistently miss bats, generally running strikeout rates between 18-19%, but his ability to throw strikes and keep the ball on the ground. Gary is a safe bet to at worst be a swing arm and should be a fast-track player to watch in the minor leagues. 

Owen Wild was a 7th-round pick out of Gonzaga and has moved extremely quickly throughout the Rays minor league system, reaching AAA this season and providing a mixed bag of results. There are command concerns with Wild that will probably hold him back from ever starting, but he has induced an impressive 37.9% O-Swing% (97th percentile) to go alongside a 28.2% whiff% (~75th percentile). Wild provides the Jays with another quick-to-the-bigs arm with some ceiling-raising potential to this deal that I think they’d like.
