Tampa Bay Rowdies Defeat Western Conference Leader Orange County SC 3-0 in California
In a top-of-the-table clash, the Tampa Bay Rowdies prevailed over Orange County SC 3-0. An incredible attacking display from the Rowdies secured the three points on the West Coast.
With both teams coming into the game as 1st place in their conference, everyone was expecting a close game between the best of the USL.
For the first 20 minutes, Orange County ran the show. They were getting past the Rowdies’ defense, and were creating chances.
The Rowdies were finding space through counter-attacks, and had some good passes into space. Unfortunately for the boys in Green and Gold, they were unable to time their runs, and were offsides often in the opening quarter.
In the 20th minute, the Rowdies had a throw-in deep in the Orange County defensive half. Dion Acoff threw the ball to striker MD Myers, who flicked it into the path of Tampa Bay captain Lewis Hilton.
While the ball was loose in the box, OCSC goalkeeper Alex Rando pounced on the ball, taking out Hilton in the process. It was a clear penalty, and the referee pointed to the spot.
Myers stepped up to take the kick, smashed it perfectly in the top bins to give the Rowdies the lead. Rando dove the correct way, but the ball was struck so well he had no hope of saving the spot-kick. This was his ninth goal of the season, and second penalty of the season.
After the Myers goal, Orange County ramped up their attack looking for the equalizer. A nice long ball found Chris Hegardt, who headed it to Yaniv Bazini. Bazini attempted a shot, and collided with Nathan Dossantos.
As a Tampa Bay writer, this was 100% a penalty. Dossantos took out Bazini as he was taking the shot and threw him off.
Despite the lack of the call, the Rowdies survived the oncoming OCSC attacks, and made it to half-time a goal ahead.
The second half started well for Tampa Bay. They did a good job keeping the pressure on the Orange County defense. Dion Acoff in particular did a good job finding the space behind OCSC, and kept firing in crosses trying to find that crucial second goal.
In the 58th minute, they found it. Right after an OCSC corner, Louis Perez stole the ball from Ousmane Sylla outside the Tampa Bay eighteen-yard box. Now on the counter-attack, Perez drove the ball into wide open space with green shirts all around him. He found Marco Micaletto on the far side of the pitch and played a pass to him. Slowing the ball down, Micaletto picked out Perez again, now in the OCSC box. Perez could have passed it to Sebastian Cruz, which would have resulted in a goal. Cruz had an open angle, and no one was around him.
Instead, Perez lost the ball. After a few seconds of pinball, the ball ended up at the feet of MD Myers. Myers passed to a wide-open Micaletto who calmly slotted home the effort from about eight yards out.
A beautiful counter-attack led to the Rowdies’ second goal of the night, with just over thirty minutes to go in the game.
Despite the goal, Tampa Bay kept the intensity up creating more chances. Both Cruz and Micaletto had great chances at goal, with chances missing by inches.
Now late into the second half, the Rowdies put the final nail in the coffin. After a beautiful tackle from Evan Conway in the Orange County half, he fed the ball through to substitute Karsen Henderlong. Henderlong popped the ball over Rando, rounded another Orange County centerback, and shot the ball into the open net.

The Rowdies survived the last couple minutes without conceding, and got their eighth clean sheet of this 2026 USL Championship campaign.
This was a gigantic improvement for the Rowdies in terms of playing. They controlled the game, kept pressing, and trying to score. A huge improvement from how they have been playing recently, especially in the first half.
The player that really stood out to me was Max Schneider. With the Rowdies having multiple injuries in the centerback position, Schneider really stepped up. He played well in the game against Louisville after Yanis Leerman was subbed out for injury.
Against OCSC, Schneider played all ninety minutes at centerback, and was all over the field. He did a great job of intercepting passes and distributing the ball around the field. A really, really good performance from the German in a position he has not played in much.
Around The League:
While the Rowdies played in sunny California, both Detroit City FC and Charleston Battery played and won their games in the USL Championship.
Loudoun United FC hosted Charleston, with the visitors leaving Virginia as winners. They won 1-0, with the lone goal coming from Langston Blackstock.
A nice through ball found Douglas Martínez on the byline, and a perfectly hit cross found a wide open Langston, who redirected the ball into the net.
Langston scored the lone goal of the game, and Charleston secured all three points.
3rd-place Detroit City FC was also on the road, travelling to Tulsa, Oklahoma. They faced reigning Western Conference Championship FC Tulsa.
Similar to the Charleston match, this was also a low-scoring game.
USL Championship leading goalscorer Darren Smith scored the only goal.
A long-range cross from Aedan Stanley got past a Tulsa defender, and found the right boot of Smith. Smith hammered in the effort just after half-time, and scored the only goal in the game.
Tampa Bay has now surpassed 40 points, having 41. Charleston Battery is in 2nd place with 33 points. Detroit City is right behind them with 31 points. Louisville City has 28 points, and Pittsburgh has 27. 6th place Rhode Island FC is two behind the Riverhounds with 25 points, and Indy Eleven and Miami FC are both tied with 22 points. Hartford is in 9th place with 21 points, and behind them is Loudoun United FC with 18 points. Right behind Loudoun is Birmingham with 17 points. Brooklyn sits in next to last with 13 points. Finally, Sporting Jax’s nightmare inaugural season continues as they have 8 points after 19 games played.
Coming Up:
It is knockout time of the USL Cup, and Tampa Bay is hosting Louisville City FC in the first round of the cup playoffs.
It has only been a week and a half since these clubs last met. Tampa Bay prevailed 5-4 after trailing 3-0 at halftime.
On Saturday, Louisville played San Antonio FC in Texas. They drew 1-1 after Louisville led for most of the game. Despite dropping the points, Louisville remains unbeaten in six of their last seven games. The loss came to Tampa Bay.
Louisville had to travel to Texas, and now travel to Al Lang, so I am hoping that plays a part in how they recover.
The biggest fear for me is the third game curse. After beating a team twice in the season, it is usually very hard to beat the team one more time.
In the game against Louisville two weeks ago, the Rowdies struggled with defending the right side. Jake Morris was a menace to the Rowdie backline when he was on the field, and I am expecting Louisville to use Morris as much as possible.
However, Dion Acoff is back from injury. He played a big part on the field against Louisville when he played. The Rowdies also acquired Conner Antley on loan from DC United, who played right wingback for Tampa Bay under Neill Collins.
I actually expect Antley to start this game, to give Acoff a rest coming back from injury. Also, Antley will be a better defender against Jake Morris. I really like Acoff, but he is better going forward. With Antley, you know he is going to be a solid defender.
I am going with a 2-1 win for the Rowdies. I am expecting a rotated squad, but I still think they will be able to prevail.
In my last preview before the August 1st Louisville game, I said Lou City vs Tampa Bay at Al Lang creates memories. I am expecting this game to be similar.
