The Player’s Shield Race Is Making Me Nervous

The USL Championship season is less than 20 days from its regular season conclusion. Thankfully the Rowdies still lead the race for the Player’s Shield. But, in a season that felt like it could turn in to a runaway, things feel more uncertain than ever at the top of the table. From a non-Rowdies fan and USL Championship perspective this is quite exciting. From my perspective as a Rowdies fan, it is extremely nerve-racking.

I am nervous because the Rowdies gap at the top of the table is down to just 5 points and could be as little as 3 points should the Charleston Battery win their game in hand. A far cry from the comfort we were feeling at the midpoint in the season. Looking at the run-in to close out the league, the Rowdies have a couple of tough games against other teams looking to finish the season strong going into the playoffs – Indy looking to find their way back into a playoff spot and Detroit trying desperately to keep their momentum into a home playoff run. These are teams that are going to want it and are willing to do anything to get a win so the Rowdies will need to bring an intensity to the matches that has been lacking recently. Thankfully, many of the Rowdies top challengers also have difficult run-ins so no game will be a walk in the park from here on out for anyone.

I am nervous because the team has felt a bit disjointed. Through match week 20 (the weekend of 2026/08/16) the Rowdies held a 65% win rate and were averaging 1.9 goals scored per game. In their 7 games since, they are winning just 29% of the time and averaging 1.1 goals scored per game – with 4 of those goals coming in a single game against a poor Birmingham Legion, meaning just 0.7 goals per game if we remove that outlier. Defensively the Rowdies have actually tightened up slightly going from conceding 0.95 goals per game to 0.86 which has helped secure important draws. But, the Rowdies are 14th in the league table and 7th in the East in that span. It is barely playoff qualification form and is most definitely not champion winning form. And you can see the drop off in point accumulation pace for the Rowdies compared to their most recent seasons below – 2021 in particular is the benchmark I am looking at – and it doesn’t look great recently.

I am nervous because some of our top players across the course of the season are seemingly out of form individually too. Players like Cicerone and Micaletto haven’t been able to get on the scoresheet at all in these last 7 games. The most recent games have seen defensive errors lead to conceding needless goals. Much of the attack feels narrower and less vertical than what we saw at the start of the season. The team as a whole has been shutout 3 times in that stretch compared to just 1 time in their first 20 matches. Something hasn’t been clicking in the attacking areas for the Rowdies. Whether thats due to players getting tired at the end of the season or shots and passes just not coming off or teams raising their levels against the top of the table Rowdies or the Rowdies themselves getting complacent and dropping their levels, I do not know. And the not knowing is only adding to the nerves.

I am nervous because for all the great play, for all of the celebrations, and for all of the memories this season will bring there is a chance – however slight – that there is no shield or trophy at the end of it. The idea that the incredible Louisville comeback at Al Lang or the late and dramatic away wins at Birmingham and Jacksonville or hard fought draws throughout the season could have all been for nothing. And while that doesn’t negate all of the greatness we have seen, it most certainly doesn’t amplify it either.

Of course it’s not all nerves though. There is an added excitement and sense of celebration that comes with this increased pressure when you come out victorious in the end. There is the experience the players and staff have that breeds a confidence and belief ahead of every game. There is the fact that the Rowdies have the points and are being chased rather than being a chaser. There is also a mob of Rowdies fans who will be behind the team regardless of the result. So, to be clear, my hope and expectation still is to at least lift the Player’s Shield in a couple of weeks time and to go on a historic playoff run to become the first team to win the Player’s Shield and Playoff Championship in the USL Championship era.
